The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
