The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
