Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
