This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
